How to Replace an audi tt Key fob not Working G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It is a little tricky to test since there are several pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and Replacement Audi a3 Key the fourth was dry. When i crank the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stay shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do, as i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. Test them out - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines requires to know both the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.

A failing G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, or a misfire in the gear. If you have any of these issues, it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and needs replacing. They're inexpensive and easy to locate particularly when they're an Bosch unit like ours. Alternately, GM's version this part would be a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be a cause for a slew of issues with your car. It is an important part of the transmission in your replacement audi a4 key, as it transmits information to the ECU on how fast or slow the car's engine is spinning. If the sensor fails, it will affect the performance of the transmission, as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49, via an uncolored wire. The ECU is then able to process this signal to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and Replacement Audi Car Key between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see around 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins. This is a common feature across the audi etron key 80-100-200-RS2 range, beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 Du You may also find them in wrecking yards.
