With a nod to retro design, this machine sports the SMEG and Lavazza branding across its front. It's more expensive and requires a large space on your counter. It's a premium pod coffee maker that is solid.

1. Nespresso Compatible

It can also make hot chocolate, which is great for kids or adults who just want to warm themselves and wind down.

Another big plus is the programable sleep mode, which goes to standby after an hour of no use. It is also easy to clean and requires very little water. If you want to keep your electricity costs low, consider opting for a machine that has an able capsule holder that can be removed to make emptying easier.

You can also add a milk maker to your coffee pod (unless one is already included in the model you purchase). You may also want to think about a coffee filter that is reusable and can be used with reusable capsules. A thermometer or water kettle for precise temperature control is another alternative.

2. Easy to Clean

The convenience of a coffee pod machine makes it easy to start your day with a quick, hot cup of coffee. In just a few minutes you'll have a freshly-brewed drink. Just put a pod in and turn it on. These machines are also easy to clean, and the majority of them don't require regular maintenance -- just refilling the water tank and descaling every six months or so.

Keurig's K-Cups offer the most variety available. They include national brands like Folgers and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters as along with grocery store favorites Dunkin' Donuts and Dunkin' Donuts. Some even have milk frothers that can be added to create a creamy cappuccino, latte or the latte.

The design of a coffee pod maker is a different aspect to take into consideration. The color, the finish and placement of the machine, as well as the size and location of the reservoir for water will determine how it appears on your counter. Some brands also provide different colored pods, which allows you to change up your beverage to suit the season or your mood.

Pod coffee makers tend to be compact and take up less space than single-serve or drip brewers. The machine is more expensive than many of the other models we've reviewed, but it offers a premium experience. The drip tray can be adjusted so it will fit tall travel mugs or shorter espresso cups. It can brew five different drinks, thanks to a bespoke barcode system that scans each compatible pod and automatically adjusts its settings to produce the perfect cup.

It's the most beautiful coffee pod machine we've seen and offers a superb-tasting beverage, particularly for an automatic. We didn't award this machine the top spot because it's not able to milk froth. The only choice is to use dried skimmed milk capsules, which don't taste as good as freshly squeezed milk. If it had a built-in milk frother then we'd probably award this pod machine the top spot.
