How to Replace an audi replacement key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test since there are different pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing at all. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was dry. When I start the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on top of each injector hole, the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stay closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car is able to start when the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is plugged in however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I don't know what to do. I believe that I've all other possibilities out. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is easy to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.

Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, gears shifting quicker than normal, and/or a misfire when in gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is likely your sensor is failing and requires replacement. The good thing is that they are very affordable and readily available, especially in the case of an Bosch sensor, which is what ours are. Alternatively, the GM version of this unit is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be a cause for numerous problems in your car. It's an essential component of the transmission of your audi car key cover remote key, informative post, because it relays information to the ECU regarding how fast or slowly the engine of the car is spinning. If this sensor fails, it could disrupt the performance of the transmission as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It sends a signal via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this signal to regulate the flow of fuel and boost as well as timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see the resistance to be around 1000 ohms in these areas. This is a standard part across the audi key fob 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best ones could be available in wrecking yards.
