iRobot has also added the option of rolling rollers under the Roomba that do not have bristles, which makes them more likely to avoid knots than earlier models. They are also taller and can fit under beds or couches with low sides. They're designed to make the model more movable on various flooring types.

What makes the Roomba 980 stand out from other high-end models however, is its integration of the new dirt detection feature, which uses cameras to identify particles of dirt embedded. This is a significant improvement over the previous model, that relied on the sensor-driven pseudorandom coverage method to bounce around the room and clean at minimum three times from various angles.

The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on carpets and hard floors. It scored extremely well on carpets with low pile and on mid-pile. It did a good job picking up pet hair but had a difficult time with the thick and long pet hair that was stuck together.

Despite these slight limitations, the Roomba 980 remains one of our best roborock vacuum and mop-performing robots, and it's even close to being as expensive as some of the other top-of-the-line models on this list. It has many of the features you'd expect from a flagship model but does not have all the fancy apps or home integrations you'll see in other top robot vacuum cleaner contenders.

The iRobot Roomba is simple to set up and get running right away. After taking off the pull tab for the battery and yellow bin insert from its undercarriage, all you have to do is plug it into its Home Base docking station or an outlet on the wall, press its big "Clean" button and let it go to work. It will return to its dock when it runs out of batteries or is full of trash. There are also indicators on top that indicate the bin is empty, when it requires recharging, or if it loses Wi-Fi.
