The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an ode to the classic sextet format, and an even more consistent and powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. Its more punk-rock sound reflected the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity on drums, and an improved, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard work was also sharper, more complex and less akin to previous efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live concert which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. A new studio album was released shortly after, and the band embarked on a long-distance tour to promote it. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded prior to. It was completed in 2001 as a duo album called Then and Now. It was the band's first album without a single song titled "A". The album also contained a previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was an uncommercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which affected his singing abilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes and the other original members of Asia - Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially reforming the group. The lineup, which was minus Howe (who was working with Yes at the time), eventually became known as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
