World of Warcraft Upgrades and Item Upgrading

Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. They also boost extra bonuses, such as PvE damage and crit chance.

For example, a weapon with the upgrade template that is ending in % will gain 3damage to attack each time it is upgraded (relative to its previous value).

The cost of upgrading an item is determined by the item's level. The cost increases with item's level.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be inserted into armor, weapons, and trinkets to give an additional stat boost or effect while they're in use. These can be obtained through crafting, purchasing from vendors trading, or looting. Certain upgrades come with special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can only be used on devices that have slots. The item must be upgraded to blue before a component can be used. Upgrade components, unlike other mods, can only be applied once. They are not able to be replaced or applied several times. Infusions and enrichments are a specific type of upgrade component used for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment and some of the items that are not ascending back. Infusions and enrichments can be recovered by salvaging gear from the ascended, or completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix may be added to an upgrade, thereby changing the name of the item it is used on (for instance, 'Canthan Armor Insignia',' changes to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost an item's Mark Level, or Rarity, which allows players to make stronger versions of the equipment with less Upgrade Crystals than are required to reach the same level of upgrade through normal methods.

A boost upgrade can alter the attack or defence attributes of the weapon or armor.
