World of Warcraft Upgrades and Item Upgrading

Upgrades can boost the value of armors, weapons and rings. They also increase bonuses such as damage from PvE and crit chance.

For example an item with the upgrade template that ends in % will take on 3damage to attack each time it is upgraded (relative to its previous value).

The cost of upgrading an item is determined by the item's level. The cost increases with item's level.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be put into weapons, armor, and trinkets to provide a stat bonus or extra impact while they're being used. These can be obtained through crafting, buying from vendors trading or looting. Some upgrades also have special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into equipment that has a slot to accommodate them; the item must be at a minimum upgraded to blue level to allow a component to be used. Unlike other mods, upgrade components can only be used once and cannot be applied repeatedly or replaced by new upgrades. Infusions and Enrichments are type of upgrade component that can be used to upgrade non-amulet legendary or ascending equipment, as in some items that aren't ascended. Infusions and enrichments can be retrieved by salvaging gear from the ascended, or completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix may be added to an upgrade, changing the name of the item it's used on (for example, 'Canthan Armor Insignia',' changes to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Some upgrades increase the Mark Level or Rarity of an item, which lets players to create stronger versions using the smallest amount of Upgrade crystals than they would need to reach the same level with normal methods.

A boost upgrade can alter the attack or defense characteristics of a weapon or armor.
